Proud to Work with Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times
The diagnosis of ‘cancer” is always devastating, but when it is your child who is diagnosed; the impact on the entire family can be unbearable. Whatever the prognosis, a cancer diagnosis interrupts childhood and hinders the experiences that lead to normal child development. The treatment regimes are taxing not only on the young patient, but on the entire family. The lives of siblings are oftentimes put on hold while the care of the stricken child becomes the primary focus. Nothing can compensate for the anguish that childhood cancer inflicts, not only on the patient but also on the entire family. However, there is one program, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times®, that comes close.
Founded in 1982, the dream was to build a place where children devastated by childhood cancer could actually be children again. The original group of 60 campers set off with volunteer doctors, nurses, community leaders, counselors and parents to Calamingos Ranch in Malibu for the first ever Camp Good Times. The Camp has grown from that original experience to offering year-round supportive programs to children impacted by cancer and their families. Services are offered to any child, from infancy to 18 years of age, who has had cancer or a similar condition or who has a sibling with one of these diseases – no matter what stage their illness is at or what treatments they are undergoing.
Camp Good Times underwent a name change to Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, in 1984, when the McDonald Operators Association of Southern California decided to fund the camp. Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times has welcomed more than 8,000 campers from 10 states and 8 countries, as far away as England, Israel and the former Soviet Union. It has served as a model for programs throughout the United States and abroad.
In 1984, Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times, moved from Malibu to its current home in the San Jacinto Mountains near Idyllwild in Riverside County, California. They purchase a 60 acre fully accredited campsite and have now taken the steps towards creating a completely barrier free camp designed around the needs of the children they serve.
Thousands of children and their family members recapture hope, enthusiasm, and love of life in a medically and psychologically safe environment created especially for them at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.
