With Eternal Gratitude…

March 23, 2014

Dear Mr. Donner and Barco’s Nightingales Foundation,
It has been over a month now that I went on a mission trip to Haiti with your help! I truly am grateful to you for assisting me in funding my trip. That was such a kind and generous thing to do for me and the others you assisted.  I was very honored to get to meet you, Mr. Donner!
Just a little background on me.  Igraduated from Delta State University 1998 as RN, BSN.  Since that time, I’ve worked in hospitals, home health, clinics, and surgical centers.  My favorite and where I feel most comfortable has been surgery.  That’s what I thought, until Feb. 2013.  I went on my first mission trip to Haiti last February. This past February trip was my third time going to Haiti.  Now I would say my favorite kind of nursing is on the mission field in Haiti!  Part of my heart belongs there with those precious children and adults that are in such great need of medical attention; in need of hope for a better life.
As a nurse, I feel honored to serve with Hispaniola Mountain Ministries in helping the Haitian and Dominican people.  They are very grateful people for any help we can offer to them.  I’ve seen and done a wide range of things in Haiti….from wound care to a nickel size hole in a woman’s foot to starting an IV on a very sick elderly man….you could be helping put in stitches to a stab wound and the next task is just love on the lady who is in extreme pain from a tumor….you may go from giving worm meds to a screaming toddler to bandaging burns from boiling rice.  The doctors and dentists that I have served with have been excellent!!! It has not only been a great learning experience, but it has truly opened my eyes to a world I had only seen pictures of and heard stories about. What an eye opening experience to say the least!
I could go on for hours about my time in Haiti and my love for these people.  But, I will just stop here by saying once again, THANK YOU for your generosity. Thank you for helping me go on this last trip, but even more I thank you for CLEAN WATER IN HAITI!!!!!  You are truly changing lives for many people! And also, thank you for recognizing nurses in a special way and making us feel appreciated!  And if any of you fellow nurses have considered a mission trip, I would like to encourage you to GO!!!  You will not be sorry and your life will be touched forever!
With much love and thanks,
Misty Lacey, RN
