Nurses: The Epitome of Professional

December 11, 2014

As a Nursing Professional, you know what real nurses do, what they look like and how they act on the job. Nurses are consistently ranked as the most-trustworthy professionals in the United States and the image of nursing has changed for the good over the years.  And, yet there are still negative stereotypes associated with the Nursing profession.

The best way to combat these stereotypes and continue to change the image of Nursing is by standing up and insisting on better representation, and that will happen when nurses’ self image improves. For example:
–Call out offensive images. When you see an ad or image that presents nurses as sex objects or handmaidens or cute characters, call or write the sponsor or creator of the image and let him/her know why it bothers you. These images are dwindling, but still exist.
–Share your story. The more people know about what nurses really do, the more people respect nurses, so let them know.
–Reinforce the positive. In the age of sophisticated patient care, ensure that you’re up to date with the latest technology and procedures that your specialty requires.
–Be a spokesperson for the profession.  Volunteer to speak at career days to promote the profession of Nursing in the community.
