Professional Leadership in Nursing
The Penn Nursing Science School published an article in its magazine called “Future of Nursing: Innovation and Global Perspectives in the Current Healthcare Environment,” in which it discuss these five areas that will be critical in 2015 and beyond:
1. Thought leadership for global healthcare
2. Impacting cost, quality and access in healthcare
3. Modeling and scaling a new method of care to improve health and reduce re-hospitalizations
4. Advancing health and nurse training through research
5. Helping veterans overcome PTSD
The article noted that “an aging population, an increase in chronic disease and rising costs for medical care are the triumvirate of healthcare challenges on a global scale. These challenges are also fueling a change in the scope of the practice of nursing, widening paths for opportunities to take on new roles in health policy, planning, provision and innovation. These roles are not really new. After all, nurses have always been at the center of the patient-care arena. But now, that unique position is coming into its own as nurses are encouraged to practice at the fullest extent of their skills in order to increase quality, access and value in a patient-centered care environment.”
The piece is an insightful look at the professional leadership role nurses continue to take in their own profession and others as they work to care for and improve the health and lives around the world.
