Feeding Bodies, Hearts, and Minds

July 30, 2015

According to the United Nations World Food Program, 925 million people in the world don’t have enough to eat. That’s more than the entire population of the United States, Canada, and the European Union. Children make up the largest segment of this number and as a result often suffer from malnutrition that impacts their physical and mental health. School meals are often the only regular and nutritious meal a child in struggling countries receives. Providing children with a nutritional meal at school reduces malnutrition, and promotes healthy development. A single meal at school can also act as a magnet to bring and keep children coming to school, ensuring they receive an education that is vital toward breaking the cycle of poverty.

Hot lunches can change lives

Nearly every country around the world offers school meal programs, providing nutritious food for approximately 368 million children every day. But many children, often in countries with the highest poverty rates, do not have these types of programs.
This is one of the reasons Barco’s Nightingales Foundation is committed to providing meals for more than 700 children in Haiti.
At Barco’s Nightingales Foundation we’ve seen first-hand the difference a hot meal at school can make. Students’ alertness and enthusiasm in learning grow and their smiles never fade. In the past 10 months, Barco’s Nightingales Foundation has served over 110,000 meals to over 500 school children in the remote mountain villages of Haiti. As of June 1, 2015, we are feeding an additional 162 students in two more schools. The difference this makes in school attendance and in the future of these young minds is amazing.
Your contributions to Barco’s Nightingales Foundation allow us to continue serving these young people in Haiti, giving them the opportunity to rise above poverty and build a stronger country for themselves and their futures. Thank you for your continued support of all our work with the people of Haiti and for showing your concern for these precious lives.
