Grooming the Next Generation of Nurses

August 27, 2015

Encouraging students to embrace the field of nursing is essential, and a major tenant of our organization. We were delighted to learn more about the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) and the work they are doing to educate, support and groom the next generation of professionals.
The NSNA was founded in 1952, as a nonprofit organization for students enrolled in associate, baccalaureate, diploma and generic graduate nursing programs.  Its mission is to foster the professional development of nursing students through educational experiences, training programs, and conferences.

Its annual conference attracts over 30,000 student nurses each year and offers leadership and career networking as well as opportunities to listen to renowned nursing leaders. The program also offers a state board exam mini review. A second annual mid-year conference offers workshops and panels on career and association development as well as a state board exam mini-review. Ten student nurses sit on the governing board, elected at the annual conference, along with two non-voting consultants appointed by the American Nurses Association and the National League for Nurses.
The NSNA also has a foundation created in memory of its first executive director.  This foundation is a nonprofit organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.  Over 2 million dollars have bee distributed from the foundation in scholarships for undergraduate nursing education.
