Meet Nisha…
On April 25, 6-year-old Nisha was sitting with her three older sisters and baby brother around an open fire at home in Tarukhat, a village in Gorkha district. Her pregnant mother was in the hospital hours away from giving birth to another baby boy. Her father was away, working in Saudi Arabia.
Suddenly the earth started shaking. The panicked children ran for the door, but the shifting ground caused Nisha to fall backward into the open fire. Her grandmother pulled her from the flames, but not before Nisha suffered severe burns on her back. For the next week, Nisha’s family stayed outdoors, under the crude shelter of a thin plastic sheet draped over wooden poles. They had no food for three days until a local NGO arrived with aid.
During that week, Nisha received no medical treatment for her burn injuries. No one even poured water on the burns because some people mistakenly thought that would make things worse. Eventually, the first-grader was taken by ambulance to the Kirtipur Hospital, where the ReSurge team works. Doctors there were able to treat her burns by grafting skin from her leg. Her road to recovery will be long, but thankfully, she is receiving the quality care that she needs from Dr. Shankar Rai, ReSurge Surgical Outreach Director in Nepal, and his team to heal and return to living a healthy, productive life.
We are proud to support ReSurge International because of work like this that provide hope and health to those in need.
