The Many Hats of Nursing

August 17, 2016

We love this letter from our Letters Campaign because it focuses on the diverse opportunities in nursing, and reminds us that nurses all share one common priority: us.

Dear Future Patients,
Letter Campaign Kristi F
If you are asked what a nurses job entails what would your answer be?  Taking blood pressures, giving shots, listening to lung sounds or giving bed baths.  These answers would be correct, but this is just scratching the surface of what we do.
Nursing is a profession that people choose because they are compassionate, caring and truly want to make a difference in people’s lives.
Most of you see nurses in the hospital caring for you at a bed side or in a doctor’s office; but did you know nurses have many different roles within the healthcare system?
There are nurse practitioners who see patients in a clinic or hospital setting just as a doctor would.  A certified registered nurse anesthetist cares for patients under anesthesia during surgery.  In addition to patient care, nurses play a major role in leadership or administration.  They help run hospitals and put the patients’ needs first while ensuring a caring touch.  There are even nurses who travel to third world countries volunteering there time to help people in need. Many of these roles require higher education such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
As you can see, there are many different aspects of the nursing profession, but the one thing is the same with all of them: We are always there for you and will be YOUR advocate within the healthcare system.
Yours truly,
Your Nurse Kristi F.
