Quinnece Washington
What an honor it is to be honored. To begin, I am a brand new graduate RN. I had no idea that my unit would be the designated COVID unit. I have two small children a 5 year old and 1 year old, my husband is a Respiratory therapist and we live with my grandmother whom is 85 yrs old.
I remember the day I went to my unit to report to work, I had no idea that I would be receiving an assignment of COVID patients and once I saw the assignment my heart dropped. My manager and one of the hospitalist of my unit reached out to me, I’m sure my face said it all, while trying to hold back tears. I feared the unknown. My manager hugged me and we talked about bravery and being strong. From that day , I feel like I overcame many fears. I have taken care of so many COVID patients thus far and have had to be a patient advocate while trying my best to protect my self and family. Our hospital has so many restrictions during these times. I’ve realized that as nurses we are the first and last people that our patients see. It’s a very unexplainable feeling caring for patients, having empathy, and a huge heart all along trying to protect yourself . I never would’ve imagined fighting the COVID war. I feel like this has definitely taught me so much and has made me a stronger nurse. I have learned such a valuable lesson during these challenging times. I have received so much support and encouragement as a new RN. In the end , I’m great full for for my position, thankful for the opportunity to learn each and every day and privileged to play such a vital roll to patients. Again, thank you for the honor. It means so much to me.
