What To Pack???

December 4, 2014

Over the years, volunteer medical missions have increased in popularity as a way of immersing yourself in the culture of a country and at the same time, making a difference. Even a short-term volunteer adventure can change your life and world perspective, and few things can give you a greater sense of meaning and a greater understanding of a culture.

Packing for this type of travel can be challenging. Here are a few tips we’ve heard from nurses that can make packing a breeze.  Start by breaking down the packing effort into three categories (On-You, Carry-On, and Suitcase).  Then, think carefully about what goes on each list.  For volunteer missions, you may want to include:
— Water filter, candles and matches – these can become essential in out-of-the-way areas.  Simple filter straws pack easily and are reusable.
— Plastic containers with tight lids can be used for food storage as well as keeping important papers and items safe from water damage.
— Fitness and leisure items such as stretch bands or a jump rope, and books to read and a travel journal for writing down your experiences.
— Gifts from home share with your host family that they may not get in their community.
— A light pot for boiling water and other cooking needs.
— Medical reference books.
