The Need for Travel Nurses
According to USA Today, there is a critical need for travel nurses across the USA. With an invigorated national economy and millions of people gaining health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, the demand for nurses who are willing to work on short assignments in different states is at a 20-year high, industry analysts say. This also means that travel nurses have their pick of hospitals and cities when it’s time for their assignments.
What is a travel nurse? A travel nurse is hired to work in a specific location for a limited amount of time. Travel nurses typically work 13 week periods in one area, and move around the country depending on where they are needed. Because the demand for nurses is so high, there are often shortages in certain areas.
Typically, hospitals hire traveling nurses for seasonal demand, according to a 2011 study by accounting firm KPMG. Nearly half of hospitals surveyed said seasonal influxes in places such as Arizona or Florida, where large numbers of retirees flock every winter, led them to hire traveling nurses.
In 2015, the need for travel nursing is expected to increase by 10% “and that trend is expected to accelerate because of higher hospital admissions propelled by the health law.
