Water In Haiti
Clean Water
People provided with clean water
The earthquake in 2010 destroyed Haiti’s existing sanitation systems and a contaminated river, used as a source of drinking water exposed them to cholera.
We have been blessed to be able to build 7 solar water wells and adopt one that was not being maintained to provide clean drinking water for over 30,000 people.
Beginnings
A friend of BNF was building a school and indicated the village in remote Haiti had no clean drinking water. We responded by offering to build a water well on the school property. It helped the people there in so many ways. We have since built 6 more solar water wells and adopted one that was not being maintained.
Solar
Barco’s Nightingales Foundation’s wells are solar powered, which means electricity is not needed and gets power from the sun.
In remote Haiti where are wells are built, they do not have electricity. With the beautiful weather and sunlight in Haiti, power from the sun is highly accessible. Our wells are not affected by storms or power issues, ensuring continual access to healthy clean water.
Long Term Solutions
We have a person who lives at each water well to maintain security to make sure it is not vandalized or destroyed. Twice a year, we have specialists check the wells and instruct our BNF people in Haiti how to maintain the wells.
Our annual visits to Haiti, brings hope and joy to the people there and the team that visits. We are able to spend time together which assures them that they are not forgotten.
Location
Our wells are built in some of the remotest areas of Haiti where they normally would obtain water from unclean rivers to drink, cook and clean.
Many women and children from the surrounding villages also travel for miles by foot or donkey to also get clean water from our solar water wells.
This year, COVID affected the world and challenged all of us. As soon as we are back to normal we are hoping to build more water wells in other areas of remote Haiti.
